Job Description

Metrology, the science of measurement, is crucial in maintaining consistency and accuracy in everything from weights to volumes used across industries. This internship will help students understand how precise measurements impact everything from consumer goods to agriculture, ensuring standards are met for both public safety and trade. This role offers students a hands-on experience working with measurement standards, specifically focusing on calibration of weight and volume devices. Applicants will gain valuable experience in data entry, laboratory safety practices, and handling precision equipment such as forklifts and cranes.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be attending an accredited college or university pursuing an undergraduate degree. 
  • Science, statistic and agriculture majors are preferred (not required).
  • Ability to perform algebraic and statistical functions including unit conversions.  
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds repetitively and 75 pounds at one time. 
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under deadlines. 
  • Employee must have a valid Class C (or higher) Kansas driver’s license or equivalent license from another state. Employee is responsible to maintain an acceptable driving record to safely drive state vehicle and be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position.

Job Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:  

  • Assist with testing, adjusting, and sealing measuring devices (weight and volume) from private and public entities using procedures set forth by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
  • Perform data entry into excel spreadsheets.
  • Unpack and pack customer’s articles and coordinate shipping arrangements.
  • Participate in laboratory housekeeping and adhere to laboratory safety practices. 
  • Operate a forklift and crane systems to load, unload and move customer’s articles in, out and around the laboratory. No prior certification is required to apply for this position.

Salary/Pay

$15.78/hour
